10 Must See Destinations in Europe

by admin on February 27, 2011

In 2007, I had the opportunity to live in Italy for 3 months. After Italy, I backpacked the rest of Europe for an additional 2 months.

While abroad, I found an awesome website that really helped me with cheap holidays all throughout Europe. In 2007 I was a bit of a newbie to the whole backpacking culture so it really helped me out. It’s basically the Expedia for Europe. If you’re interested, check out the link.

Shortly put, the time I spent in Europe was amazing. I was able to see so many diverse places and cultures that I sometimes had to pinch myself to make sure it was real. However, some places just stuck out to me as “must see” destinations in Europe.

So without further ado, here’s my list of the Top 10 Must See Destinations of Europe.

1. Lucerne, Switzerland

The Alps are at your doorstep

Hands down, Lucerne is my favorite town in Europe. It’s small, cozy, and perfectly set on a lake at the base of the Alps. My buddy and I took a train up one valley to do some incredible hiking in these magical mountains. The Alps and Lucerne will always hold a special place in my heart as a perfect getaway from the hassles of a modern lifestyle.

2. Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

This is the castle that inspired Disney. The castle is perfectly set overlooking a lush valley and river below. I took a picnic lunch up with me on the hike to a viewpoint overlooking Swan Lake and Neuschwanstein Castle. It was one of the best lunches of my life! Your senses are on overload as you try to take in the smells and view of this incredible location.

3. Paris, France

Paris was by far my favorite city throughout Western Europe. How could you not fall in love with this city? The Parisians have a reputation of being rude, but I found it to be the complete opposite. The people there were incredibly friendly and helpful. And the sheer volume of sights in the city and wonderful atmosphere makes Paris a must.

4. Prague, Czech Republic

If you’re looking for a place that’s straight out of a fairytale, Prague is it. I literally felt like I was walking through a real life storybook. The castle that overlooks Prague is nothing short of spectacular and the architecture leaves you walking in awe. The Czech Republic is also known for it’s fantastic beer so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to grab a pint or two.

5. Hvar, Croatia

Wanna get away from it all? Hvar is the place to be. And the prices are fantastic. I went in the off-season and had my own fully furnished apartment for $10 a night. Hvar also has some crazy nightlife. So lounge by the beach all day and party all night!

6. Sevilla, Spain

I think the Spanish have it all figured out. Siestas, tapas bars, and sangria. What else could you ask for? Sevilla is also home to final resting place of Christopher Columbus. I fell in love with the Spanish culture, food, and way of life in Sevilla. It’s a must if you’re anywhere in the south of Spain.

7. Rome, Italy

The Roman Forum

There’s so much history in Rome that it’s impossible for it to not make the list. The Pantheon, Forum, and Colosseum are only but a few of the ancient attractions in Rome. Combine that with Italian wine and sexy accents and you have a recipe for a good time.

8. Barcelona, Spain

If you’re looking for some fantastic nightlife, look no further than Barcelona. The city is absolutely rocking! And the weather is typically amazing. Just beware of the mobs of prostitutes late at night. They are aggressive and will pick pocket you in a heart beat.

9. Venice, Italy

It’s hard to not fall in love with this romantic destination. I’ve never been to a city literally built on water and it struck me as one of the most unique destinations I’ve ever visited. Shell out the cash to take a gondola ride through the canals. It’s totally worth it and if you have a significant other on your side, it makes it even better.

10. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is actually two cities that have grown into one, Buda and Pest. Budapest is known for it’s extensive cave network nearby. If you have the chance, go spelunking. It’s an experience you’ll never forget. The city’s architecture is marvelous and I couldn’t help myself from snapping photo after photo of this picturesque city.

So what do you think? Are there any places I’m missing on the list of the Top 10 Must See Destinations in Europe? I would love to hear from ya!
