World’s 9 Best Sunsets

by admin on January 19, 2011

Who doesn’t like sunsets? It would be like saying you don’t like puppies!

Sunsets are pretty, they’re romantic, they’re great to drink a bottle of wine over, and they make for some awesome photographs.

Plus, they’re a great way to end a day. It’s sorta like tipping your hat and saying “bravo” for a day well done.

With that said, I’d say I’ve been pretty lucky in my young adult life.

I’ve been to all continents except Antarctica and seen some incredibly beautiful locations.

However, there are a select few that have been etched in my brain for the rest of my life. And the reason?

THE SUNSET

1. Maui

I may be a little partial to Maui since I lived there, but this place has incredible sunsets. For reals! Almost every sunset is like a paintbrush paints the sky in oranges, reds, and yellows that you didn’t think were possible. Every evening, if I could, I’d head down to Front Street in Lahaina and watch the sunset over the Pacific. Can you say a perfect ending to a day in paradise?

2. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a remarkable city. The Danube literally splits the city in two, which actually used to be two cities-Buda and Pest. As the sun sets over the hilly and green Buda side of the city, the sky lights up brilliantly reflecting off the Danube and Parliament House.

3. Sahara Desert

There is something uniquely beautiful about the stark desert. Barely anything lives there. It’s dull and brown. It’s a mass of endless, shifting sand. Yet, it’s incredibly beautiful and beckons adventure. And as the sun sets over the endless sand, the sky lights on fire as if held underneath a match.

4. Tuscany, Italy

This region must get loads of sun to produce the famous Chianti wine. I had the opportunity to live in Italy for 3 months and the sunsets witnessed were nothing short of spectacular. Plus, you can buy a delicious 1 Euro bottle of Chianti and enjoy it on the porch overlooking sun drenched, grape vine covered hills.

5. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro quite possibly could be the most beautiful city in the world. As the sun sets in the west behind lush green mountains, the light permeates cracks and crevasses in the mountains, which creates distinct shadows in the sky. The combination of these unique shadows cast into the sky and vibrancy of Rio below will knock your socks off! My favorite memory was watching the sunset as the fun loving Brazilians were playing soccer on the beach. I couldn’t help but smile.

6. Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

There’s something uniquely different about sunsets in Asia. I’ve never seen a sun turn so red as it does there. Add island paradise and turquoise waters and you’ve got a recipe for some great photo opportunities.

7. Serengeti, Tanzania

Imagine, the sun setting over an Acacia tree as lions emerge from the bush as you set up camp for the night. That’s  not fiction, that was my reality as I camped the east coast of Africa this last August. If you want to feel like you’re living in a Discovery Channel episode, go there.

8. Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Besides the fact that you’re in the crystal clear, warm waters of the Pacific, you have a prime time spot for sunset viewing at the Whitsundays. Whether it be behind the mast of a 50 foot sailboat or behind an untouched island, you won’t be disappointed by sunsets in this paradise.

9. Petra, Jordan

As the sun sets to the west, the light reflects off the red rock cliffs of Petra. Slowly the rock morphs from yellow to orange to red before your eyes as if you were watching a light show on display. It’s no wonder this craggy region was inhabited a thousand years ago, if only for the sunsets alone.

Of course, there are hundreds of other amazing locations for sunsets. I just hope you enjoyed the gorgeous scenes I’ve experienced on my travels. Cheers!

have traveled all over the world and experienced many amazing sunsets but I must say that Herne Bay in Kent, UK is up there with the best. The most spectacular sunset occur in the mid summer when the tide is out, absolutely breath taking.
