After flipping my itinerary completely around, I found myself now sitting on a beach on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand, known for the Full Moon Party. For the past two weeks, I have been in the south of Thailand amongst it’s many islands. I came to Thailand expecting to see some gorgeous beaches and immerse myself in a culture very different from my own. What I didn’t realize was that someone forgot to mention the fact that EVERYONE comes to Thailand to party. I came expecting to recharge the batteries and am leaving completely drained.
But I’ll back things up a bit to fill you in on what I have been doing the last 2 weeks. I first went to the island of Koh Phi Phi otherwise known as Swede island. This place was completely taken over by tall, tan, blonde haired, blue eyed Scandinavians. Phi Phi itself is very small, but it boasts a large number of beach bars including a bar with flaming jump ropes, flaming hoops, and flaming limbo for drunk tourists to enjoy. Let’s just say one can spend an entire evening watching others escape near death.
The waters surrounding the island are a beautiful turquoise and palm trees are everywhere. It truly is peaceful except for the nonstop blaring techno music and constant drinking. Seriously, Thailand never goes to sleep. People here party until 5 in the morning and start it all over again the next afternoon. It’s a marathon and I’m happy to say that I have survived.
For the past 4 days, I have been on the island of Koh Phangan which hosts the Original Full Moon Party. The party itself is just plain nuts. Flaming jump ropes, slides, dance platforms, buckets and beer everywhere. All for 20,000 tourists to enjoy one night every month. I feel fortunate to be staying at a resort 15 minutes outside of where the main party is at. Here, one can get a little rest and it’s more relaxing. Plus, it’s 8 dollars a night for a resort that has a bar, 2 pools, and is set on the beach. Not too shabby.
My next stop is Koh Tao where I plan to do some diving. Koh Tao claims to have the best diving in the world and there are chances to see massive whale sharks cruising around. This is something I just HAVE to do. So tomorrow, I’ll be taking a 2 hour ferry to a new island.
After Koh Tao, I plan to head to the north of Thailand and see a bit of culture. At this point in time, I’m a little islanded out. I know, rough life. Anyways, for now this is me signing out and I’ll do my best to update this more regularly. Aloha from Thailand.
