Awesome! If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I love a good ol’ chat.

Hi Ryan,

We are heading off to Africa for 6 weeks in June. I love your photos – what sort of camera did you use? Any hints you can give about travel, photography etc would be great. We are going to Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and the Gorillas!

Thanks

Anne

Hi Anne,

Awesome about going to Africa. You’re going to have an amazing time.

I used a Nikon D60 for my photos. I was really happy with the camera on my travels. I takes great portrait photos and can take a beating. I dropped and beat it several times and the thing works like a charm.

I hear the gorillas in Uganda are meant to be incredible. I have a buddy who runs tours in Uganda and it’s his favorite country in Africa. As for other parts, I loved Zanzibar for a place to relax on the beach. I would spend as much time in Tanzania as you could. The Serengeti is great as is Ngorongoro Crater. Both are fantastic for game viewing and seeing the Africa you see in the magazines.

I can’t comment on Botswana or Namibia as I’ve never been. I particularly enjoyed Malawi while in East Africa. The people are incredibly friendly there and Lake Malawi is beautiful.

As for photography, you’re going to see so many unique and interesting things, it’s going to be hard to stop snapping photos constantly. Sometimes I found I needed to take a step back and enjoy the scene with my own eyes vs. getting that awesome photo. I hope you have a good zoom lens for your safaris and/or gorilla viewing.

If you want to know anything specific, feel free to shoot me an email and ill help as best I can.

Hello Ryan,

Can you tell me what overland travel company you used in Africa? I’m also looking into an overland Africa trip and can’t decide on which company.

Thanks!

Hey Susan. I used Drifter’s and would definitely recommend them. They were great, but also a bit spendy.

Hi Ryan,
Recently went through you site. The best. I read some where on your site that you were in
Texas. By chance did you go to South Padre Island deep in the south of Texas.
Any comments about Texas and and cities you visited.
I am planning a move to South Padre.
Happy travels.
